Will cellular marketing take off in a big way ?

We have heard talks from various startups and mobile service providers about cell phone marketing becoming the next big medium in India. When ?

Lets have a look at what's in-play and what's holding them back ? The only successful mobile campaign is by Hutch in Mumbai. Hutch runs and manages a campaign on behalf of restaurants and cinema halls offering discounts on Tuesdays when the demand is the poorest. Another similar service is offered by burrp! - when you download business card of an establishment, you may also get a gift cupon.

What's Holding them back ?

"Advertisers want to bulk message the subscriber base of a telecom company, which amounts to spam. Telcos are very rightfully opposed to this," he says. Kejriwal has a slightly different perspective" said Arvind Rao, CEO, OnMobile

"No responsible telco will reveal details about their users. The telco will not be willing to participate until it has a business proposition and the necessary permission from the subscribers" said Naveen Chopra, Chief Marketing Officer, Hutch

"Mobile advertising is only a supplementary medium. We will need to have more traditional agencies spreading it as a part of the media mix. But there is need for intervention from specialist agencies to support the mainline agencies too" said R Lakshminarayanan, CEO, Mudra Marketing Services

Adding to their woes is low penetration of higher-end handsets which means advertisers have no choice but to test SMS based ads only. OR They can go for a model where mobile calling can be free.

Mobile Handset Manufacturers Market Share in India

You asked for it, and you got it. Market share of cell phone handset manufacturers in India. Here is the latest statistics.

Nokia: As expected with rocking sales day after day, year after year, can you expect them to be slackers ? No Way. Their marketshare was whopping 73% in Sept-05 and at the end of Aug-06 it had increased to 77%.

Motorola: The American giant has woken and is trying to catch Nokia in India. Indians love Nokia so much that it may just be a Mission Impossible for Motorola. Motorola has grown from 2% market share in 2005 to 10% in Aug-06.

Sony-Ericsson: What went wrong is anybodies guess. It lost market share in the past year from 8% to 5% at the end of Aug-06.

Samsung: Another loser in the cell phone handset war in India. Samsung lost 5% market from 9% to 4% at the end of Aug-06.

Others: Other lesser mortals like LG, Panasonic, Siemens and Philips together have a mere 4% market in India.

Reliance India Mobile video streaming to go Live

Reliance Communications Limited, will turn the switch on for mobile video streaming for the first time in India on Thursday when Microsoft CEO, Steve Ballmer will deliver his keynote in India.

Mobile video streaming is similar to a webcast and is useful to provide online video of popular event footage to millions of viewers on a mobile phone.

Currently, 50% of Reliance India Mobile handsets can support video and audio streaming. I am sure, Wedding and Birthdays will be the most streamed occasions.

I am still not very clear from this article how can I subscribe to a stream that is being done by my friend in Mumbai ? Has he got to inform me ? Or will I be able to search for available streams ?
