UK's Virgin group Founder and CEO, Richard Branson was very impressed by the business model and operating efficiency of Mumbai Dabbawallas [Lunchbox carriers]. However, Airtel didn't take it too long to realize how Richard Branson would use the Dabbawalla's platform to establish the presence of Virgin Mobile in India when MNVO comes into effect.
Airtel just a while ago announced that they have tied up with Dabbawallas to distribute Airtel Mobile pre-paid cards, recharge coupons and bundled handsets.
Manu Talwar of Airtel said,
The company is all set to leverage the large distribution network of dabbawalas to reach out to a larger consumer base. They are known for their honest, down-to-earth and gentlemanly nature. So you never know how one established business model can be of use to another.Labels: Airtel Mobile |

| Bharti Airtel introduces Charity by SMS |
|
India's Number on Mobile Service Provider, Bharti Airtel Ltd just a while ago kicked off with a new service - Charity by means of SMS. Like me and countless other Indians who long to donate to places such as Lord Manjunatheshwara of Dharmasthala or Shri Siddhivinayak of Mumbai, can now just do it from the comfort of their Mobile Phones.
Users can donate between Rs 10 and Rs 150 in one SMS and Airtel charges Rs 4 for the premium SMS. Format of SMS is " ".
Following are the SMS Temple Codes for donations,
- Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara - SDM
- Shri Siddhivinayak, Mumbai - SVT
- Shri Guru Raghavendraswamy of Mantralaya - SRS
- Shri Jalrama - JST
For example send an SMS, "SDM 51" from any Airtel Mobile to 64655 and Rs 51 will be donated on your behalf to Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara.
Beyond any doubt SMS is the Killer application of Mobile 1.0 in India. |

| Mobile Phone Manufacturing - Destination Chennai |
|
Hats off to the Indian IT and Communications Minister - Dayanidhi Maran. First it was Nokia which was given the facility to setup a manufacturing hub near Chennai. Close on the heels of Nokia shipping its 20 Millionth phone from the Chennai facility, Motorola announced a massive $100 Million manufacturing and global R&D facility again in Chennai.
Now Sony Ericsson has realized that they just can't be out of the rat race and made an announcement just a while ago that they will manufacture phones in association with Flextronics and Foxconn - global manufacturing partners for Sony Ericsson. Sony Ericsson's plant will be located once agian near Chennai and its annual production capacity in India is expected to touch 10 million by 2009 said a company spokesman.
Sony Ericsson had a handset market share of 5% in India at the end of Q3-2006. Motorola displaced Sony Ericsson from number two spot mainly because of the success of its Razr phone. |
