| SMS Tariffs under TRAI Lens |
|
TRAI which had decided not to intervene with SMS Tariffs has asked the Telcos on why their rates have not come down with the fall in Wireless call prices.
TRAI is specially unhappy with Inter-Circle and premium VAS SMS costs which range between Rs 2 to Rs 10. In case if the Telcos fail to provide satisfactory answer or doesn't pick up the clue that TRAI wants to see the tariffs lower, TRAI will intervene and fix ceiling rates.
A GSM telco argued that they share the revenue with content owner in case of premium SMSes. However, in case of SMSes sent for contests or quizzes, there is no content involved and that forms the bulk of the market.
GSM users sent about 26 SMSes a month in quarter ending March-08 down from 28 SMSes in the quarter ending Dec-07.Labels: SMS-Market |

| Insight into Subscriber Parameters |
|
The Indian Mobile industry witnessed strong growth in Q1. Bharti Airtel continues to top the chart. While the April-June quarter typically experiences slower net additions after a year-end spurt, Q1 additions this time around have been fairly strong. No new licensees have started their operations yet.
Refining the numbers we find that Circle C ARPUs continue to stay ahead of A & B circles. This comes as a surprise since in the last year's analysis - as penetration deepens, we expected the C circle ARPUs to drop faster, which has not happened. Low penetration of fixed line phones can be attributed as the reason for higher ARPU in mobile segment.
Many analysts had concerns that the new subscribers coming on the network from C circles are of low quality with limited Outgoing usage and hence will impact MoU/ARPU. However, this doesn't seem to be TRUE even with increased rural and semi-urban penetration.
Lastly, with drop in call rates, SMS usage is tapering off. |

| 93% of Wireless Market with Big 6 Operators |
|
The Big 6 Wireless Operators led by Bharti Airtel, BSNL, Vodafone India, Reliance Communications, Tata Indicom and Idea Cellular control 93% of the market i.e 258 mn subscribers of total 277 mn.
The subscriber base is expected to double from the current levels within the next 5-6 years and this is where the new entrants in the wireless game who are betting on. Along with the new entrants, existing smallerp layers such as BPL Mobile, MTNL, Shyam Telelink and HFCL Infotel face an uphill task in retaining customers once the much needed mobile number portability is in place.
We are surprised by Videocon promoted Datacom's CEO Dhoot's statement on Mumbai circle which already has 65% of cellular penetration,
I do not think this is a cause of concern since there is a market for 6 mn which can be addressed and there is a scope to relook at tariffs. The new entrants do not have any plans for 3G [atleast haven't spoken about it] where bulk of the ARPUs will be 2 years from now. Depending on just voice, limited 2G data capabilities and limited value added services maybe suicidal for the new entrants and small players. |
