Wireless Operators Revenue Comparison

Breaking NewsThis is probably the first time that you are seeing the revenue comparison of all the major Wireless Operators in India. [Vodafone India's breakup were not available in the past since its not a listed company]

All figures in Rs Million. For Period Apr-1-08 to June-30-08
Indian Wireless Operators Revenue for Q1 FY09Top 5 Wireless Operators based on Q1 FY09 Revenues are,

  • Vodafone India - 45,721
  • Reliance Communications - 31,486
  • BSNL - 22,898
  • Idea Cellular - 22,029
It is really surprising to see that Vodafone India with operations in 18 circles and heavily dependent on Mobile Services is beating RCom an integrated Telecom player with International presence. The worst performer is the Government Owned BSNL which has the highest spectrum for operations as well as the largest copper land line network for DSL broadband.

Update: The chart shows only Revenues from Wireless Operations [GSM or CDMA or Both] Sorry, by referring to Integrated Telco it confused some readers.

Will RCom Migrate users to GSM from CDMA ?

You are reading this first hereIt is well known fact that Reliance Communications will start PAN India GSM Wireless operations by the end of this year. However, the major question is - Will RCom adopt a strategy to migrate all CDMA subscribers to GSM platform and eventually shut the CDMA network ? The management in several conference calls has indicated that it will continue to run both however, analysts at HSBC have a different opinion.

The report said,
We see no reason why an operator would want to run dual networks for a moment longer than is absolutely necessary. Running two networks simultaneously is complex and expensive and, in our view, the sooner RCOM deals with the issue of how to migrate its subscribers from CDMA to GSM the better.
HSBC estimates how users in India will be migrated from CDMA to GSM network as shown in the graph below.
End of CDMA Era in IndiaAll current developments suggest that Tata another cellular operator will also migrate to GSM. HSBC report strongly suggests that CDMA networks will be closed and it is question of when and not if. Did the Jacobs of Qualcomm shoot in their feet when then IT Minister, Mr. Maran invited them for talks but the former refused to budge.

3G Wireless Spectrum Auction

3G Wireless Services IndiaThe DoT has announced 3G Spectrum Auction thus paving way for high bandwidth applications to run on wireless networks. 5-10 blocks (of 5Mhz each) per circle in 2.1Ghz band at reserve price of Rs 20.2bn for nation-wide license. In circles with >5 slots, the bidding intensity would be lower than say Mumbai / Delhi, where there are only 2/3 slots.

Three blocks of 1.25MHz each would be available for CDMA operators in the 800Mhz band. Both, the assured allotment to MTNL/BSNL and CDMA spectrum (pro-rata) would be allotted at the highest bid price in 2.1Ghz. Foreign Operators are also allowed to bid but they need to have a UASL license first.

To summarize, the following chart shows spectrum availability for 3G GSM, 3G CDMA and Wireless Broadband.
