| Airtel Introduces Freedom Plan - Per Sec Billing |
|
A week ago we made a business case that Airtel is likely to shift to per second billing. Bingo! Bharti Airtel has introduced Freedom Plan which is based on a pulse of second.
Details of Airtel Freedom Plan: Airtel OnNet Calls [Terminating on Airtel Network] - 1 Paise / Second - Local or STD All other Calls - 1.2 Paise / Second - Local or STD.
Kindly note that Airtel Freedom Plan is available only for pre-paid GSM customers.
However, if you observe closely, that is if a customer talks for 1 minute, he ends up paying 72 paise / call compared to 50 paise by Reliance and 60 paise by other operators.
Update: To activate this plan you have to get a Recharge Coupon of Rs 64 and the plan will be applied to your account with 12 months validity and ZERO Talktime. You have to recharge separately to get Talktime.
Local SMS Rs 0.5 STD SMS Rs 1.5

| Airtel Likely to Shift to Per Second Billing |
|
It is highly likely that Bharti Airtel will shift to Per Second billing as per whispers in the analyst circle. Overcapacity in urban centres has accelerated the dual SIM phenomenon, in our view, as new schemes have allowed for arbitrage opportunities. We believe that Bharti needs to stop arbitrage opportunities, and we would not be surprised if Bharti adapted to billing per second on a pan-India basis or go the RCOM way and lower tariffs on all plans to INR0.5.
A wait and-watch approach may cause a longer-term strategic disadvantage, as it would allow new entrants to build scale and make them eligible for additional spectrum.
Network Utilization Will be the Mantra: Various schemes in the market are allowing subscribers to avail themselves of lower rates on outgoing calls, and as such, traffic is moving away from incumbents to new players. New players following such a move would have limited room for rate cuts.
Finally, in the next 12-24 months, this would accelerate the cash burn of marginal players and could accelerate the consolidation process. However, any consolidation also would depend on spectrum reforms and regulators’ approach to the process of allocation of additional 2G spectrum. |

| Speed Post SMS Tracking Feature - Making Money |
|
India Post which is here to serve the Public has taken a noble initiative by introducing SMS tracking interface for Speedposts. However, we register our objection to the premium SMS service which the Government undertaking has taken to serve the consumer as it will cost a whopping Rs 3 / SMS.
To track your Speedpost, send a SMS to 55352 in the following format
SPSpeed Number For example - SPSpeed EK381207108 [Omit the IN]
To track EMS by SMS send an SMS to 55352 in the following format
EMSSpeed number
Speedpost's track record, atleast in my experience is quite unreliable. Had booked a Document Packet to Mumbai and I don't understand from where did Rajkot come into picture when I was tracking the document online. [See Pic Below]
Online tracking of Speedpost is the best alternative today. |

| Telecom Tower Infra - State + Analysis |
|
As Reliance Telecom Infrastructure readies itself for the IPO, here is the state and analysis of Telecom Tower Infrastructure in India. At the end of FY2009 [March], India had ~282,000 Telecom Towers serving 390 mn wireless customers.
Tower operators bullish on growth prospects for new entrants, launch of next generation technologies. 3G/WiMAX deployments in top 100 cities could require incremental 18,000 cell sites primarily from 900/1800 MHz operators. Tower operators looking to offer all elements of network for sharing.
Projected Tower Capacity for FY-10 March - 2010 Indus Towers - 116,000 Reliance Infratel - 50,000 BSNL - 55,000 Bharti Infratel - 30,000 Vodafone - 8,500 Idea Cellular - 9,000 Quippo Telecom Infrastructure - 36,000 [For Tata] GTL Infrastructure - 10,000 Essar Telecom - 6,500 Others - 21,000
The capital cost to install a ground-based tower has declined to nearly Rs 2.5 million on average from Rs 2.8 million–3.0 million a year ago due to falling commodity (primarily steel) prices.
Revenue per tenant has fallen to nearly Rs 32,000 for the first tenant and Rs 30,000 on average for the second tenant for ground-based towers. Fuel and power costs are also paid by tenants on the tower on a shared basis and average nearly Rs 23,000–25,000 per month.
